Apple Crumble
Updated: Jul 29, 2022
Apple crumble is the Ultimate comfort dessert. So easy to prepare and you really can’t mess this up!
Over the years I have experimented with this recipe several times and settled on this one. The topping is crunchy but not too crunchy and the apples are perfectly spiced and not too watery or mushy.
I used gala apples which are naturally sweet, if you prefer less sugar you can try granny smith apples.
I decorated it with an Apple rose to finish if off. It just elevates the dessert and makes it super pretty!

Total Time:
Prep time 20 mins
Baking time 45 mins
Total time 1hr 05 mins
Equipment:
10 inch pie dish
Ingredients:
2 lbs Apples
Juice of half a lemon
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt
3 Tbsp flour
Topping
1 cup flour
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
½ cup plus 1 tbsp cold unsalted butter
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup old fashioned oats (not quick oats)
1 cup chopped walnuts
Pinch of salt
Apple Rose Decoration
1 Red apple
2 Tbsp lemon juice
METHOD:
Preheat oven to 375 F
Peel, core and chop apples into medium sized chunks
Toss them with the lemon juice, sugar, salt, vanilla extract, cinnamon and flour and set aside

Make the topping, mix the flour, sugars and cold cubed butter. Rub it with your hands till it resembles fat bread crumbs

Stir in the oats, cinnamon, baking powder, salt and nuts
Put the apples in your dish first, spoon the crumble on top
If you want to decorate with the apple rose make a little shallow well in the center of the crumb
Bake for 15 mins at 375 F and then lower the oven to 350 F and bake for 30 mins till golden brown on top and apples are bubbling
To make the rose, core the apples and thinly slice them. Put slices in some lemon water and microwave for 1 -2 minutes till soft.
Lay them out in a line, overlapping a bit and roll up. Secure with toothpicks and add more slices on the side to make it bigger. Place it in the center of the dessert when done
Enjoy!

Some helpful tips:
Your butter should be cold when you rub it in with your fingers. You can also use a pastry blender if you have hot hands
Place your dish on a baking tray when you bake it, because the apples bubble up and may make your oven messy
